REMEMBER MIDDLE SCHOOL? We thought so. You know how nice it would’ve been if some very cool person (preferably younger than your parents) had come to hang with you even once a week? Maybe help you with homework, work on your reading comprehension or basic math skills, or just play chess or board games, maybe shoot some hoops… and provide ONE moment in your week when you were truly excited to be at school? If this describes you, and you can manage 42 minutes once a week between 7:10 and 5:00, check out Success in the Middle. There are all kinds of opportunities for engaging in the life of a middle schooler – even some evening and weekend options. The videos posted on the home page and the ‘prospective volunteers’ section give a sense of what the kids are like and what some of the volunteers do with their student(s). If you can’t spare the time at the moment but would be willing to post a flyer or share info at work or church, please e-mail jwencel@usd259.net and ask her to send one you can post. Exciting Volunteer OpportunityTuesday, February 17, 2009On Friday, March 6, KPTS needs 9 volunteers to answer phones during a LIVE night of our Spring Membership Drive. The event will be from 6:30pm – 9:00pm. The program is Yanni Voices: Live from the Forum in Acapulco. For the past 2 years, Yanni has mentored four young singers and now, those voices have put lyrics to Yanni’s already popular songs! On March 6, one of the voices, Ms. Leslie Mills, will join KPTS in our studio! Dinner will be provided (from Carrabba’s Italian Grill) and only 9 can participate, so if you want to help out with this exciting event, act fast. Contact Jill Heggen with KPTS to sign up by calling 316.838.3090 ext. 218, 316.217.5166, or send her an email. Wichita Community Foundation SurveyMonday, February 16, 2009

Like that great advice you gave your friend or the suggestion you offered to your boss? Did you really feel like you were heard and that your opinion was going to be taken seriously? What if you could share your thoughts on a new Wichita? Share your thoughts and actually have them heard? That is what is YPW is offering you. You might be surprised at how many groups have come to me telling me how much they want to know what YPs want in this community. Visioneering, Wichita Downtown Development Corp., Wichita Initiative for a Renewed Environment, just to name a few. And the opportunities to share your thoughts are happening NOW. No matter what stage of life you are in, you definitely have an opinion about Wichita. We need more dog parks, more bike paths, a grocery store downtown, more places to mingle that aren’t centered around partying. I’ve heard you all talking about it. Now I need you to come out and share these things and jump on board to making them happen. So what do you want this city to continue with or improve upon? There are so many outlets in the coming weeks to make sure your voice is finally heard. So stand up. Join YPW in shaping this community’s future. Whether you are new and have suggestions or have grown up here and what to voice your concerns. STAND UP. It is time. It is our time. Wichita is ready for our voice. Make sure yours is heard. I know mine will be, because I enjoy it here. I want to stay here. I want to be part of the change. I want you to be part of this change. Check out our calendar of events and our blog for all of the upcoming opportunities (know that I only list YPW/Chamber events on our calendar – that will change once our new website roles out in April though – the rest of the events I know about go directly to our blog and Twitter). Thursday is the YPW launch of Visioneering’s R3 (already have over 60 people coming), and the list goes on and on from there. I hope to see you soon… Share your thoughts on the EnvironmentThe Wichita Initiative for a Renewed Environment (WIRE) wants you to be a part of this unique opportunity to create community partnerships building towards a healthier Wichita. We're bringing together community members, business, local government, education, and non-profit groups to address environmental issues in Wichita. Today, February 10th, WIRE is hosting its first open, community discussion group. We want to hear your thoughts, issues, and concerns about our environment here in Wichita. We are quite excited about this project because this is the first time the EPA's Community Action for a Renewed Environment (CARE) has been to Kansas. Please join us for our first open, community discussion group: Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009 2-3 p.m. Sunflower Room KU School of Medicine-Wichita 1010 N. Kansas, Wichita, KS Visit the KU School of Medicine-Wichita website at http://wichita.kumc.edu/care for more information and a map to the School of Medicine.
