Job Security

A new goal of mine is to pass along interesting articles/blog posts I come across. This one is from EmployeeEvolution.com regarding job security. Ryan Healy writes about Gen Y wanting employability, and I have to agree with that.
What do you think?

I completely agreed that most people want job security. As a Gen X'er, I have seen and experianced first hand the layoffs of 911, the struggles to re-enter the job market, only to again be let be let go because I was assigned to an over budgeted program, but made an impression on my superiors to wanna keep me, and they did but the transfer was to another failed program, which I managed to make some progress there before being let go due to reductions in workforce. Now I find myself on the battle grounds once again with a reduced 3 day work week at my thrid employer in the past 8 years, and fears of yet another layoff, or release due in part to a strike by one of our main customers, and financial pressures to reduce costs. Again I'm having to jocky internally in hopes of avoiding a 3rd layoff withi the same industry. I've found that a college degree helps land a job quickly, but you gotta somehow move every 3-5 years either on your own and at your employers will. Still, while employed your building up your experiance, and experianced go places, and stale employees go nowhere up the corporate ladder. In life you have to always be willing to take risks but you'll usual come out better over time. my advise Gen y'er is to first identify your key strengths and try to match them to the position and or industry you are wanting to work in. Like the economy you start off on the bottom, and may experiance several highs and lows throughout your career path, but like the stock market has proven to come back time and time again, so will you and your career if you continue to add new skills sets and take opportunities as though they are your continuing education. As far a security in the modern era, I say there is NONE to be had. The best security you got out there is yourself, so always be prepared to moved/update your skills set every 3/5 years and keep building on those experiances. Sometimes you'll go up/laterial/down, but over time you'll arrive. Stay moving but again every 3-5 years and I prefer internally, but my experiance has come from the economic reality in that when the econmy is down and you're laid off, usual other doors open, and if you're not laid off, then seek to absorb others past tasks, assignments, duties, and diversify yor skill set that way. I hope what I said has touch someone, but again, my success has come from doors clsoing and reopening, so I natural go where I can deliver and build new skill sets the best.
